When you go down to the woods

This half term the children in Nursery will be starting a new and exciting language programme called Neli Pre-school. You will receive weekly ‘home learning’ suggestions which highlight the ‘special words’ that have been learned that week and, how you can further support their learning at home. Please see below for a more in-depth explanation and videos of the books that will be focussed on this half term.

In PSED, the children will talk about their feelings and be supported in how to manage those emotions.

In Maths, the children will be focusing on subitising, counting and making groups of 3 plus, comparing size using the words ‘taller/shorter’.

In the wider curriculum areas such as ‘Understanding the World’, the children will be learning about Lunar New Year, exploring and joining materials and, combining and heating/cooling material through cooking.

                                      NELI Pre-school

NELI Preschool is a nursery-delivered oral language enrichment and intervention programme for children in the year before they enter formal education – usually three- to four-year-olds.

The programme provides a 20-week evidence-based language intervention for all children, as well as additional targeted support for the children who need it the most.

The NELI Preschool programme is built around the shared reading and guided play of 20 carefully selected and beautiful Nosy Crow books. The intervention targets children’s vocabulary knowledge, narrative (storytelling) skills and active listening. Each week in the 20-week programme focuses on a different book, teaching the children ‘Special Words’ from the books and building their narrative skills with a range of fun activities. All the children in the setting take part in daily whole group language enrichment sessions.
