The children began on our school field, where they had the opportunity to try their hand at some Stone Age hunting techniques. Using an Atlatl, they challenged themselves to throw darts as far as they could, before using Bolas to try to hit a series of targets. There was plenty of concentration, competition and encouragement as everyone worked to improve their throwing and aiming skills.

We then headed into the woods on our school site, where the children practised moving as silently as possible through the trees to stalk their prey – our Teaching Assistants waiting at the far end of the woods! The children had to use their observation, listening and stealth skills to get as close as possible without being spotted.

Our final challenge was to explore how Stone Age humans may have created fire. We discussed how they could have used rocks containing metal-rich minerals to create sparks, before trying a more modern method using ferrocerium and a steel striker.

The event also provided the first opportunity for our new Year 5 Forest Rangers to put their leadership skills into practice. They supported the Year 3 children throughout the activities, helping to explain challenges, offering encouragement and making sure everyone had the chance to get involved.

The new Rangers earned their roles after writing applications and demonstrating excellent practical and teamwork skills during Forest School in Year 4. It was fantastic to see them already growing in confidence and beginning their journey as young leaders.
