In addition to children with SEN accessing 'Quality First Education' in our main classrooms, we also have Enhanced Provisions support bases like our Bluebells class.

Bluebells provides highly specialised education and bespoke support for children with complex special educational needs. Most children access Bluebells part-time for core subject teaching and learning. Bluebells has a high adult:child ratio, and staff are specially trained. Bluebells has a dedicated teacher for all morning sessions. In the afternoon, the children either access their mainstream classes or join our bases in the Nook for communication and interaction support.

Bluebells primarily supports children with complex Communication and Interaction Needs. The base offers highly specialist bespoke provision and support for children in Key Stage 2. The Curriculum and provision in Bluebells is overseen by our Enhanced Provision Lead and Specialist SEN Teacher Mrs Bennett, Teacher Mrs Winter and the base is staffed by highly specialist TAs. 

In Bluebells we place an importance on pupils developing and maintaining connections with their peers within the EP and in the mainstream classes, and ensure access to enrichment activities in the child’s best interests either with their mainstream peers or access to alternative enrichment activities. The high staffing ratios and the highly specialist environment supports pupils to develop self-regulation techniques supporting their access to a bespoke pre-key stage curriculum based on their needs and individual targets.

Phonics in Bluebells

At Glade Hill we teach phonics using the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds systematic synthetic phonics scheme. This systematic approach teaches our children to use synthetic phonics as a strategy to support them in becoming fluent readers and confident writers. This rigorous approach is adopted throughout school to ensure consistency and progression, including in our Enhanced Provision support bases and SEN Unit specialist resource provision.

Children in Bluebells are taught daily discrete phonics lessons and are encouraged to apply their knowledge. For some children this is part of a small group and for others is 1:1. The children also receive precision teaching of tricky words. For some children, their reading books are supplemented with the use of Makaton signs and symbols. This is a specialist approach advised by outside agencies including Speech and Language Therapists and the Nottingham City Learning Support Team.
