Yr 3 - Fantastic Firs

Welcome to Fantastic Firs!

Autumn 1

Welcome to Year 3!

Our topic this half term is called... MAGICAL MAYHEM

and it is all about the circus! We will be reading a book called Leon and the Place Between, which is all about a magical adventure that begins in a circus.

In Science we will be learning all about forces and magnets. In Design Technology we will then be creating our own magic tricks using magnets. In Art we will be creating some magical world scenes in the style of the artist Hundertwasser.

Literacy

In Literacy this half term we will be learning to write stories set in Imaginary Worlds. This will be based on Leon and the Place Between. We will be reading and exploring the text and then using this to write our own exciting stories. Please remember to read with your child at home and record this in their diary. If your child reads 3 times a week, they will receive a star on their teddybear and begin working towards their Red Ted 1 award. It is very important that they have their diary in school every day. They will be checked for reading on Fridays.

Maths

This half term we will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction. This year we will continue to be maths superheroes by learning lots of our times tables. Please help and encourage your child with learning their times tables at home. They will soon be bringing home

information to show which times tables they are working on.

We are GOLDEN and we SPARKLE!

Summer 1

I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and a huge welcome back to everyone in Fantastic Firs!

As always, I have loads of fab learning opportunities planned for you all this half term which I’m very excited about!

This half term, lots of our learning will be based around our Big Question:

Should we grumble when it’s windy?

In our topic work this half term, we will be studying the coast! We will be learning about the seaside over time and about the geographical features we find at the coast. We will also be designing and making kites for our Fabulous Friday Design Technology project and creating art inspired by Southwold artist Serena Hall.

Literacy

In Literacy, we will be studying Myths & Legends and writing our own fantastic, adventurous Quest Myths. To help us to do this we will focus on writing detailed setting descriptions and designing characters including a hero or heroine, a bad guy or girl and a fantastical beast! To help us with our learning, we will be reading and studying a selection of Myths & Legends. Our class book this term is ‘A Stitch in Time’ by Penelope Lively which fits in perfectly with our Topic and contains lots of super vocabulary to inspire our writing.

Maths

In Maths this half term we will be focussing on fractions. We will also be continuing with our Maths Super hero challenge. Don't forget, to 'defeat' your next Super Hero, you must know your number facts/times table perfectly and be able to complete a speed test. This is definitely something that you can be working towards at home as well as in school. Well done to children who have already defeated one or more superheroes!

Spring 1

A warm welcome back and a Happy New Year to everyone in Fantastic Firs!

As I'm sure you have noticed, my name has changed since the start of the school year.  This is because I got married in October so I am no longer Miss Cosstick and my new name is Mrs Aikman!  I'm thrilled to be back at Glade Hill after a lovely Christmas break and I'm very excited about what we'll be doing this half term.  We are very lucky to have two fantastic trainee teachers with us for Spring 1, Miss Flynn and Miss Bingham.  They have lots of fabulous ideas to help make your learning even more fun, I can't wait!

This half term, lots of our learning will be based around our Big Question:

What would happen if the wheel had never been invented?

In our topic work this half term, we will be learning all about the Stone Age! We will also look at different rock types and study volcanoes.  In addition, we will be designing and making Stone Age homes in a Design Technology project as part of the new, improved Fabulous Friday!

Literacy

In literacy, we will be learning all about play scripts and writing, and acting in, our own fabulous Stone Age themed plays! We will be using said synonyms and adverbs to help us write stage directions and we will look at different ways of representing speech in stories and play scripts.  This will help us to truly understand the structure of a play script and how it is different to the structure of a story.  To help us with our learning, we will be reading and studying 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura.

Maths

In maths this half term we will be focussing on multiplication and division.   We will also be continuing with our Maths Super hero challenge.  Don't forget, to 'defeat' your next Super Hero, you must know your number facts/times table perfectly and be able to complete a speed test.  This is definitely something that you can be working towards at home as well as in school.  Challenge accepted?

In literacy, we will be learning all about story writing and writing our own exciting Adventure Stories! We will be using adjectives and adverbs to describe and a range of conjunctions to make our stories exciting for our reader.
