Yr 3 - Fantastic Firs

Welcome to Fantastic Firs!

Summer 2

Welcome back Fantastic Firs to your final half term in Year 3!

Wow, I can’t believe that it’s already the half final term, what a year we’ve had! As always, we have lots of exciting things planned for the final few weeks of Year 3.

This half term lots of our learning will be based around our Big Question:

Do all Medicines Make You Better?

In our topic work this half term, we will be learning all about nutrition. We will be looking at what food humans and other animals need to eat in order to stay healthy and to grow. We also have our trip to The Whistlestop Centre to look forward to on 21st of June and additionally we will be designing and making a healthy lunchbox in Design Technology as part of our Fabulous Friday activities.

Literacy

In literacy, we will be super busy this half term as we will be studying and writing two different genres of literacy. Firstly we will be looking at Non-Chronological Reports and writing our own reports on nutrition. Then we will study Stories with Familiar Settings and write our own final fantastic stories packed full of all the spelling, punctuation and grammar we have been working on this year. To help us in our learning we will be reading and studying 'Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Nutrition' by Lizzy Rockwell and ‘Cliffhanger’ by Jacqueline Wilson.

Literacy

In Literacy, we will be studying Myths & Legends and writing our own fantastic, adventurous Quest Myths. To help us to do this we will focus on writing detailed setting descriptions and designing characters including a hero or heroine, a bad guy or girl and a fantastical beast! To help us with our learning, we will be reading and studying a selection of Myths & Legends. Our class book this term is ‘A Stitch in Time’ by Penelope Lively which fits in perfectly with our Topic and contains lots of super vocabulary to inspire our writing.

Spring 1

A warm welcome back and a Happy New Year to everyone in Fantastic Firs!

As I'm sure you have noticed, my name has changed since the start of the school year.  This is because I got married in October so I am no longer Miss Cosstick and my new name is Mrs Aikman!  I'm thrilled to be back at Glade Hill after a lovely Christmas break and I'm very excited about what we'll be doing this half term.  We are very lucky to have two fantastic trainee teachers with us for Spring 1, Miss Flynn and Miss Bingham.  They have lots of fabulous ideas to help make your learning even more fun, I can't wait!

This half term, lots of our learning will be based around our Big Question:

What would happen if the wheel had never been invented?

In our topic work this half term, we will be learning all about the Stone Age! We will also look at different rock types and study volcanoes.  In addition, we will be designing and making Stone Age homes in a Design Technology project as part of the new, improved Fabulous Friday!

Literacy

In literacy, we will be learning all about play scripts and writing, and acting in, our own fabulous Stone Age themed plays! We will be using said synonyms and adverbs to help us write stage directions and we will look at different ways of representing speech in stories and play scripts.  This will help us to truly understand the structure of a play script and how it is different to the structure of a story.  To help us with our learning, we will be reading and studying 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura.

Maths

In maths this half term we will be focussing on multiplication and division.   We will also be continuing with our Maths Super hero challenge.  Don't forget, to 'defeat' your next Super Hero, you must know your number facts/times table perfectly and be able to complete a speed test.  This is definitely something that you can be working towards at home as well as in school.  Challenge accepted?
