English writing resources

This week in English, we’re going to be beginning our new writing unit: short tension-filled historical narratives. We will be writing our own stories set in Ancient Rome using, Christina Balit’s,’Escape from Pompeii.’ We will be immersing ourselves into the text this week to learn about the impact of a tension-filled story on the reader, and how a writer achieves this through their structure and language.

Monday:

Tuesday:

Today we’re going to be making predictions and asking questions about a text. Using only the front cover, we’ll begin to ask questions and reflect on what we can learn from it. Begin by watching the lesson which can be accessed via our video resource centre. When you have done this, head over to Purple Mash and complete your task, labelled, ‘Tuesday 23rd .‘

Wednesday:

Today we’re going to delve into our story Escape from Pompeii. Begin by watching the lesson that can be accessed via the video resource centre. When the video asks you to pause, follow the YouTube link below to listen to the story being read. You’re now going to think about the structure of the story by retelling it, and plotting on how the tension unfolds. Head over to Purple Mash and complete your task labelled, ‘Wednesday 24th .‘

Thursday:

Today we’re going to be thinking about the author’s choice of language. As we read the book yesterday, we noticed that the story took a dramatic turn and there was a real sense of urgency to escape. Begin by watching the lesson, which can be accessed via the video resource centre. You’re then going to head over to Purple Mash, and complete the task labelled, ‘Thursday 25th’ by hunting for different words and phrases as explained in the video.

Friday:

Today we’re going to be finding common themes in three different extracts. Each of the stories we will look at today, include characters trying to flee danger. Begin by watching the lesson, which can be accessed via the video resource centre. As you read the extract, I would like you to make a list of words and phrases that show these characters are in danger and are trying to get away. Head over to Purple Mash and complete your task, labelled Friday 26th’.
