Welcome to Fantastic Ferns 2023-2024!
Welcome to our class page! I am so excited to be sharing our learning journey with you on this page this year. In Fantastic Ferns, we are GOLDEN, we SPARKLE and we have lots of fun.
On this page you will find information about the learning taking place each half term. You will also find information about homework, time tables practice and letters.

Key Information
Read at least 3 times per week and get your diary signed by a grown up.
Practise spellings on your colour spelling band each week - the words are in your diaries.
Practise your times-tables every week - have a look at the times table section on our class page!
Complete your homework which will be set on a Friday and need to be handed in by the following Thursday.
We are mathematicians
In maths this half term we will continue learning about time. We will be learning about units of time including years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds. Our last two topics we will cover are shapes and statistics. We will also be continuing to practice previously learned concepts in our maths blast sessions.
We are writers
Our English lessons this half term will be inspired by the book ‘Escaping the Giant Wave' by Peg Kehret.
Lots of our writing lessons will be recapping the techniques we have already learnt this year, such as: description, subordinating conjunctions and sentence openers.
We are athletes
This half term, we will be doing athletics in our PE lessons. These lessons will be outside on the field so make sure you have appropriate kit.
We are scientists
Our science unit for the half term is about plants. The big question we will be investigating is 'Why do plants have flowers?' We will be doing some experiments and lots of research to support our learning in this topic.
We are geographers
In geography we will be building our knowledge of physical characteristics looking at volcanoes. We will be learning how a volcano is formed and what causes volcanic eruptions.
We are mathematicians
In maths this half term we will be continuing our learning about fractions and understanding how to add and subtract fractions. We will also be starting a new topic of learning, money. We are learning about how to convert pounds to pence, adding money, subtracting money and find change.
We are writers
Our English lessons this half term will be inspired by the book ‘Aru Shah and the end of time' by Roshani Chokshi.
We will be learning how to write non-chronological report and myths.
We will be recapping the techniques we have already learnt this year, such as descriptions, subordinating conjunctions and sentence openers.
We are athletes
This half term, we will be practicing striking and fielding skills for our PE lessons. These lessons will be on a Tuesday and Thursday. These lessons will be outside on the playground so make sure you have appropriate kit.
We are scientists
Our science unit for the half term is Animals including humans (nutrition). The big question we will be investigating is 'What is a healthy diet and why is it important?' We will be learning about a balanced diet, identifying the food groups and investigating the nutrients of different foods .
We are historians
In history we will be learning about our local history. We will look in detail at Nottingham Castle and use sources to understand why Nottingham castle was burnt down.
We are mathematicians
In maths this half term we will be continuing our learning about length and perimeter then moving onto our new unit of work all about fractions. We will also be continuing to practice previously learned concepts in our maths blast sessions.
We are writers
Our English lessons this half term will be inspired by the book ‘The Boy with the Bronze Axe' by Kathleen Fidler.
We will be learning how to write persuasive letters and recounts.
We will be learning about paragraphs, subheadings, rhetorical questions, exaggeration and many other techniques that will make our writing fantastic!
We are athletes
This half term, we will be going swimming for our PE lessons. These lessons will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Please make sure you remember your swimming kit every Tuesday.
We are scientists
Our science unit for the half term is forces and magnets. The big question we will be investigating is 'How do magnets work?' We will be learning about how magnets work, different types of force and testing for friction.
We are historians
In history we will be learning about changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will look in detail at how life was different back then than it is today.
We are mathematicians
In maths this half term we will be continuing our learning about multiplication and division then moving onto our new unit of work all about area and perimeter. We will also be continuing to practice previously learned concepts in our maths blast sessions.
We are writers
Our English lessons this half term will be inspired by the book ‘Stig of the Dump' by Clive King.
We will be learning how to write diary entries and non chronological reports.
We will be learning about expanded noun phrases, similes, subordination, paragraphs, subheadings and many other techniques that will make our writing fantastic!

Our science unit for the half term is materials where we will be learning about rocks. The big question we will be investigating is 'What are rocks and soils like?' We will be learning about different types of rock, how fossils are created, different types of soil and many other interesting things.

We will be learning how to persuasive speeches and science fiction stories.
We will be learning about expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, onomatopoeias, similes, rhetorical questions, paragraphs and many other techniques that will make our writing fantastic!
We are athletes
This half term, we will be doing dodgeball in our PE lessons. These lessons will be inside in the hall. Make sure you have appropriate kit in school.
We are scientists
Our science unit for the half term is energy where we will be learning about light. The big question we will be investigating is 'How do we see the lights at Goose Fair?' We will be learning about how we see lights, how lights are reflected, how shadows are created and many other interesting things.
We are geographers
In geography we will be building our knowledge of places in the United Kingdom by comparing Nottingham and The Peak District. We will look closely at maps to be able to find differences in the human and physical features of both these places.
We are mathematicians
In maths this half term we will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction. We will also be continuing to practice previously learned concepts in our maths blast sessions.
We are writers
Our English lessons this half term will be inspired by the book ‘Malala's Magic Pencil' by Malala Yousafzai.
We will be learning how to write poems, biographies and adventure stories.
We will be learning and including exciting adjectives, expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, facts, paragraphs, commas and many other techniques that will make our writing fantastic!
We are athletes
This half term, we will be doing basketball in our PE lessons. These lessons will be outside on the playground so make sure you have appropriate kit.
We are scientists
Our science unit for the half term is animals including humans where we will be learning about the human body. The big question we will be investigating is 'Why do animals have skeletons?' We will be learning the names for bones and muscles in the human body as well as investigating if all animals have skeletons.
We are geographers
In geography we will be building our knowledge of the United Kingdom and places within it. We will look closely at maps and atlases and be able to find and locate key human and physical features. We will focus specifically on maps of Nottinghamshire and be locating key features in our local county.
