Mr Winter & Mrs Aikman

Spring 1 - Lost in Space!

We are mathematicians...

In maths, we will be building on our Year 4 learning of calculating area. We will be able to explain what area is and use counting and multiplication as a strategies. To deepen our learning, we will explore calculating area of rectilinear shapes and use this knoweldge to solve problems. Using multiplication and divison, we will describe the changes in measurement and use this to solve comparison and change problems.

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘Orion Lost’. We will use this as inspiration to write our own narrative about a journey through space going wrong and landing at an unknown location. Following on from this, we will develop our writing techniques to write a biography about an important figure!

We are scientists

Our focus for this half term is 'Earth and Space'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knoweldge and enquiry to be able to answer our big question: What moves and how do we know? We will explore the different planets in our solar sytem and how they rotate around the sun. We will develop our understanding of day and night as well as the movement of the moon around the Earth.

We are historians

In history, we will be learning about the Anglo-saxons and Vikings. We will explore why they invaded and settled in Britain, What life was really like for them and what they left behind.

We are designers

In DT, we will be working towards making our very own Automata design.

In PSHE, we will be learning about how our everyday choices can impact the environment. We will learn how to show compassion for our environment.

Autumn 2 - All Creatures Great and Small

Our new class novel is 'When the Mountains Roared' by Jess Butterworth.

We are mathematicians

In maths, we will be developing our knowledge of multiplication and division using short methods. Towards the end of the term, will be focusing on negative numbers, and be exploring how negative numbers can appear on both horizontal and vertical scales and develop an understanding of how to calculate intervals across zero.

We are writers

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘When the Mountains Roared’. We will use as inspiration to write our own persuasive magazine article about leopard conservation. As our class novel has links to Australia, we will also be writing a non-chronological report based on an Australian animal.

We are scientists

In science, we will be looking Forces. Throughout the half term, we will be working scientifically the gain an understanding of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling objects. We will explore the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction as well as recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have greater effect.

We are geographers

In geography, we will develop an understanding of the geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom

We are artists

In art, we have a textile focus this half term. We will be learning about the craft maker Mabel Mckay and develop weaving techniques to create our very own woven baskets.

In PSHE, we will be learning about safe relationships and respecting ourselves and others.

Autumn 1 - Adventure and Discovery

Our class novel is 'The Land of Roar' by Jenny Mclachlan.

In maths, we will be focusing on decimal fractions. We will be looking at adding, comparing and ordering and rounding numbers with tenths and hundredths. We will also be thinking about representations of money and considering the most efficient strategies when adding and subtracting money.

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘The Land of Roar’. We will use this to help us writing our own version of an adventure story. We will be practicing our use of expanded noun phrases, five sense and different exciting sentences to make our writing more enjoyable for the reader. As our class novel has links to Mauritius, we will also be writing a non-chronological report based on this beautiful island!

In science, we will be looking at the life cycle of living things. Throughout the half term, we will explore the life cycle of birds, mammals, plants and amphibians. We will be working scientifically by using secondary resources, interpreting and recording data, asking questions and drawing conclusions.

In geography, we will be using atlases to locate the countries of Europe. We will develop our knowledge of the position and significance of latitude and longitude, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as well as the Arctic and Antarctic Circle. We will also be delving into the United Kingdom to develop our understanding of the aspects that have changed overtime.

In art, we will be replicating the work of…, as we develop our mastery and skill in hatching and shading. We will also develop an understanding of dimension and perspective through drawing for a purpose.
