Summer 2

 

We are writers...

This half term we'll be a climax to the Perseus and Medusa myth, a short diary entry from the perspective of a Trojan soldier in the Trojan War, and we'll also be writing a speech - we'll loo at some key figures, such as Greta Thunberg and Martin Luther King Jr, who have made particularly important speeches. 

 

We are readers...

We'll be reading the Greek myths: Daedalus and Icarus and Odysseus and the Cyclops; we'll also read some non-fiction texts about Zeus, Cronus, Pandora and Cerberus. Finally, we'll look at two songs from the Evan Hansen musical. 

 

We are mathematicians...

This half term in maths we'll be focussing on shape and angles, and also a look at statistics and plotting coordinates. This will include plotting, and interpreting graphs and tables, measuring, drawing and finding missing angles, and identifying regular and irregular polygons, drawing symmetry and much more!

 

We are artists, scientists, historians and athletes...

The London Eye Mystery

Spring 2

 

We are writers...

This half term we'll be writing a mystery story, a newspaper about a missing boy (based on The London Eye Mystery book) and a mystery poem, based on one of our reading texts (The Listeners). 

 

We are readers...

We'll be reading The London Eye Mystery as our class novel, and then some mystery and crime themed texts, starting with The Listeners poem and What Is He Building In There? poem, and then moving onto some extracts from Curious Cases: True Crime For Kids. 

 

We are mathematicians...

This half term in maths we'll be focussing on converting fractions to decimals and percentages, and rounding decimals. We'll then be moving onto learning how to calculate area, perimeter and volume. Every morning we'll be practising maths skills from 8:30 - so being on time is crucial! 

 

We are designers, scientists, geographers and athletes...

Orion Lost

Spring 1

 

We are writers...

This half term we'll be doing writing the climax to a science fiction narrative, and also a biography. 

 

We are readers...

We'll be reading Orion Lost as our class novel, and then some space themed texts, starting with learning about how old stars are and what a 'Standard Candle' is in space, and then we'll be looking at the lyrics to 'Defying Gravity' from the musical Wicked. 

 

We are mathematicians...

This half term in maths we'll be focussing on multiplication and division, and then going back to fractions, where we'll be finding fractions of amounts and also we will be multiplying fractions. Every morning we'll be practising maths skills from 8:30 - so being on time is crucial! 

 

We are artists, scientists, geographers and athletes...

Autumn 2

 

We are writers...

This half term we'll be doing persuasive writing, trying to persuade an adult to adopt a kitten from the RSPCA, and then campaigning to stop the poaching of snow leopards. We'll then be writing balanced arguments, discussing, "Should school get a pet?" and "Should animals be kept in zoos?"

 

We are readers...

We'll be reading When The Mountains Roared, Cloudbusting (poetry), an interview with Arinza Stanley (a focus for our art) and finishing with The Polar Express. 

 

We are mathematicians...

This half term in maths we'll be focussing on fractions. Starting with comparing fractions, we'll then move to addition and subtraction. Every morning we'll be practising maths skills from 8:30 - so being on time is crucial! 

 

We are artists, scientists, geographers and athletes...

We are writers and readers!

In our writing lessons, we will be using Land of Roar as a stimulus to write Non-Chronological reports, with a focus on relative clauses and technical vocabulary. As well as this, we will be writing our own adventure stories, inspired by Roar – taking our audience on an exciting adventure.

 

In our shared reading lessons, we will be developing our skills by reading and understanding texts across a range of genres - both fiction and non-fiction. Our main focus will be on understanding vocabulary and improving our inference and retrieval skills.

 

We are mathematicians!

In our maths lessons this half-term, we will be learning about place value, with a focus on place value – understanding the value of digits in numbers and different ways we can make numbers up to 10,000.

We'll then be moving on to addition and subtraction.

Year 5 Greek Day

Summer 2 - Our House is on Fire!

We are mathematicians...

This half term in Maths we will be continuing to develop and consolidate our knowledge of fractions. We will also be learning about angles and their properties. We will learn that obtuse angles are between 90 and 180 degrees and a reflex angle is more than 180 degrees. Following on from this, we will be practicing converting between units of measurement, including metres to centimetres and litres to millilitres. Throughout the term, we will continue to practice our arithmetic skills. 

 

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book 'The Last Wild'. We will use this as inspiration to write a magazine article all about recycling and how important it is for our environment. After this, we will be writing persuasive letters all about the environment, ensuring to use key persuasive writing features. 

 

We are scientist,... 

Our focus for this half term is 'Animals, including humans'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knowledge and enquiry skills and being able to answer our Big Question: Why and how does a human change over time? The children will be learning all about the different stages of development - from babies to old age! 

 

We are geographers, creators and athletes ... 

In Geography, our topic focuses on our local area - Bestwood! The children will be exploring and researching Bestwood and its features, from how it has changed over the years, to comparing it to a rural location. In DT we will be creating a monitoring device to check the temperature of animals’ habitats. Our PE focus will be athletics where we will learn how to do a range of different athletic events. We will also be developing our sportsmanship skills.

 

 

Summer 1 - Groovy Greeks!

We are mathematicians...

In Maths, we will be starting a new unit on factors, multiples and primes. We will recap our knowledge on times tables and fact families. We will develop our knowledge of squared and cubed numbers and use these to support us in understanding volume. Then we will begin to extend our knowledge and understanding of fractions. We will look at both unit and non-unit fractions

 

We are writers... 

In English this half term, we will be studying the book 'Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief'. We will use this as inspiration to write a diary entry. Following on from this, we be writing a non-chronological report about a Gorgon! 

 

We are scientists... 

Our focus last half term was materials. This half term, we will be using the knowledge we gained from this to practice working scientifically. Our big questions is 'What skills do scientists use when working scientifically?' Each week the children will work in specific skills that will lead them on to plan and conduct their very own investigation! 

 

We are historians, artists, designers and athletes... 

In History, we will be learning about the Ancient Greeks! Each week we will be exploring a different enquiry, such as who were the Greeks? What were their achievements? In Art, we will be designing and creating our very own sculptures using natural resources. In DT, we will be exploring monitoring devices. During our PE lessons we will be learning how to field accurately and strike the ball.

  

PSHE... 

In PSHE, we will be learning all about physical health and well-being. 

 

Spring 2 - Whodunnit?

We are writers

In our writing lessons, we have a ‘Whoddunnit?’ theme – trying to solve the mystery of where Salim disappeared to! We will be using The London Eye Mystery to write newspaper reports about his disappearance and then writing our own mystery stories! We will practice using relative clauses, changing sentence structure, using appropriate vocabulary and parentheses.

 

We are readers

In our shared reading lessons, we will be developing our skills by reading and understanding texts across a range of genres - both fiction and non-fiction. Our main focus will be on understanding vocabulary and improving our inference and retrieval skills.

 

We are mathematicians

In our maths lessons this half-term, we will be learning about scaling problems, using multiplication and division. Then, moving onto calculating with decimal fractions.

We will be building on decimal and fraction knowledge that has been learnt in previous years and continue to improve our fluidity when converting between decimals and fractions.

 

We are Geographers, Designers, Scientists and athletes 

 

In Geography we are learning all about Mountains - looking at their features, location in the world and comparing mountains of different continents.

Our DT lessons will have a focus on Textiles, where we will use felt and blanket stitch to design, make and evaluate a stuffed toy! 

In science, our topic is Materials, during this we will be trying to use our learning to answer the Big Question: How can materials be changed reversibly and irreversibly??

Our PE lessons will be based on target games and we will also be swimming this half term! So don't forget your kits :)

Spring 1 - Lost in Space!

 

 

We are mathematicians...

In our maths lessons this half-term, we will be learning about different methods for multiplication and division.

These include partitioning, column method (expanded and short) and the bus stop method for division.

Practising your times tables regularly will really support this!

 

We are writers...

In our writing lessons, we will be using Orion Lost to inspire 2 pieces of writing. The first is a diary entry from the perspective of an astronaut, where we will be learning how to use parenthesis and parentheses. The second will be part of a science fiction story, where our character is lost in space. In these stories we will be using prepositional phrases and relative clauses to add description.

 

 

We are readers

In our shared reading lessons, we will be developing our skills by reading and understanding texts across a range of genres - both fiction and non-fiction. Our main focus will be on understanding vocabulary and improving our inference and retrieval skills.

 

We are scientists

Our focus for this half term is 'Earth and Space'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knowledge and enquiry to be able to answer our Big Question: What moves and how do we know? We will explore the different planets in our solar system and how they rotate around the sun. We will develop our understanding of day and night as well as the movement of the moon around the Earth.

 

We are geographers, artists and athletes

In Geography we are comparing two regions of the UK and Australia, specifically their human and physical characteristics, thinking about why they may differ or be similar.

Our Art lessons will have a focus on Painting, where we will use paint to create atmosphere and texture in our own final pieces. Our PE lessons will be based on gymnastics, dance and movement.

 

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning about how our everyday choices can affect the environment. We will learn how to show compassion for our environment.

We are writers

In our writing lessons, we will be using When the mountains roared as a stimulus to write a magazine campaign article persuading people to adopt a snow leopard, as well as writing a discussion text, thinking about the advantages and disadvantages to animals being in a zoo!

We will be working on many persuasive writing features and including direct and indirect speech.

 

We are readers

In our shared reading lessons, we will be developing our skills by reading and understanding texts across a range of genres - both fiction and non-fiction. Our main focus will be on understanding vocabulary and improving our inference and retrieval skills.

 

We are mathematicians

In our maths lessons this half-term, we will be learning about money, negative numbers, multiplication and division.

We are consolidating our knowledge of negative numbers, by calculating with them and learning short methods for solving multiplication and division equations.

 

We are geographers, designers, scientists and athletes 

 

In Geography we are learning Locational Knowledge and identifying human and physical characteristics of different key countries.

Our Art lessons will have a focus on Drawing, with this changing to a weaving focus towards the end of the half term. 

In science, our topic is forces, during this we will be trying to use our learning to answer the Big Question: How and Why do things move?

Our PE lessons will be based on dodgeball and volleyball.

In science, our topic is living things and their habitats. During this, we will be comparing and learning about the lifecycle of amphibians, mammals and birds.

Our PE lessons will consist of skills for invasion games.

During our sculpture topic, the children will be creating a bust of Medusa using only recycled items. Towards the end of term the children will be creating a combined piece of art incorporating printing and painting, using printing paint and watercolour. 

 

We are philosophers... 

In PSHE we will be learning about growing and changing during RSHE week and keeping safe.

The children will also explore converting units. They will convert between units of measure, fractions and decimals, common conversions of 1 as well as conversions that correspond to 100 parts.

In English this half term, we will be studying the book 'Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief'. We will use this as inspiration to write a diary entry. Following on from this, we be writing a non-chronological report about a Gorgon! 

 

We are scientists...

Spring 2 - Whodunnit?!

We are mathematicians...

In maths, children will be introduced to the concept of volume. They will learn that volume is measure in cubic units and will develop the knowledge that volume of cuboids can be calculated by multiplying the length, width and height. This half term, children will also be able to explain what a factor is and explain how they can systematically find all the factors of a number. They will also explain how they can identify a prime number.

 

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘London Eye Mystery’. We will use this as inspiration to write a news report about the strange disappearance of one of the characters. Following on from this, we will use a video clip as a stimulus to write our own mystery story!

 

We are scientists...

Our focus for this half term is 'Materials'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knowledge and enquiry to be able to answer our big question: How can we change a material reversibly and irreversibly? Children will be learning all about dissolving materials and separating mixtures through filtering, sieving and evaporation. 

 

We are historians...

In history, we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will explore why they invaded and settled in Britain, what life was really like for them and what they left behind.

 

We are designers...

In DT, we will be working towards making our very own stuffed toys.

 

PSHE...

In PSHE, we will be learning about Money and Work and take part in the fiver challenge.

Spring 1 - Lost in Space!

We are mathematicians...

In maths, we will be building on our Year 4 learning of calculating area. We will be able to explain what area is and use counting and multiplication as a strategies. To deepen our learning, we will explore calculating area of rectilinear shapes and use this knoweldge to solve problems. Using multiplication and divison, we will describe the changes in measurement and use this to solve comparison and change problems. 

 

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘Orion Lost’. We will use this as inspiration to write our own narrative about a journey through space going wrong and landing at an unknown location. Following on from this, we will develop our writing techniques to write a biography about an important figure!

 

We are scientists

Autumn 2 - All Creatures Great and Small

Our new class novel is 'When the Mountains Roared' by Jess Butterworth.

We are mathematicians

In maths, we will be developing our knowledge of multiplication and division using short methods. Towards the end of the term, will be focusing on negative numbers, and be exploring how negative numbers can appear on both horizontal and vertical scales and develop an understanding of how to calculate intervals across zero.

 

We are writers

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘When the Mountains Roared’. We will use as inspiration to write our own persuasive magazine article about leopard conservation. As our class novel has links to Australia, we will also be writing a non-chronological report based on an Australian animal. 

 

We are scientists

In science, we will be looking Forces. Throughout the half term, we will be working scientifically the gain an understanding of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling objects. We will explore the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction as well as recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have greater effect.  

 

We are geographers

In geography, we will develop an understanding of the geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom

 

We are artists

In art, we have a textile focus this half term. We will be learning about the craft maker Mabel Mckay and develop weaving techniques to create our very own woven baskets. 

 

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning about safe relationships and respecting ourselves and others. 

Autumn 1 - Adventure and Discovery

Our class novel is 'The Land of Roar' by Jenny Mclachlan.

Maths

In maths, we will be focusing on decimal fractions. We will be looking at adding, comparing and ordering and rounding numbers with tenths and hundredths. We will also be thinking about representations of money and considering the most efficient strategies when adding and subtracting money.

 

English

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘The Land of Roar’. We will use this to help us writing our own version of an adventure story. We will be practicing our use of expanded noun phrases, five sense and different exciting sentences to make our writing more enjoyable for the reader. As our class novel has links to Mauritius, we will also be writing a non-chronological report based on this beautiful island!

 

Science

In science, we will be looking at the life cycle of living things. Throughout the half term, we will explore the life cycle of birds, mammals, plants and amphibians. We will be working scientifically by using secondary resources, interpreting and recording data, asking questions and drawing conclusions.

 

Geography

In geography, we will be using atlases to locate the countries of Europe. We will develop our knowledge of the position and significance of latitude and longitude, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as well as the Arctic and Antarctic Circle. We will also be delving into the United Kingdom to develop our understanding of the aspects that have changed overtime.

 

Art

In art, we will be replicating the work of…, as we develop our mastery and skill in hatching and shading. We will also develop an understanding of dimension and perspective through drawing for a purpose.

 

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning our families and friendships and how to respect ourselves and others.
