Summer 2 - Our House is on Fire!

We are mathematicians...

This half term in Maths the children will be learning about angles and their properties. They will learn that obtuse angles are between 90 and 180 degrees and a reflex angle is more than 180 degrees. Following on from this, the children will be practicing converting between units of measurement, including metres to centimetres and litres to millilitres. Throughout the term, we will continue to practice our arithmetic skills.

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book 'The Last Wild'. We will use this as inspiration to write a non-chronological report all about recycling and how important it is for our environment. Following on from this, we will be writing persuasive letters all about the environment, ensuring to use key persuasive writing features.

We are scientists...

Our focus for this half term is 'Animals, including humans'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knowledge and enquiry skills and being able to answer our big question: Why and how does a human change over term? The children will be learning all about the different stages of development - from babies to old age!

We are geographers...

In Geography, our topic focuses on our local area - Bestwood! The children will be exploring and researching Bestwood and its features, from how it has changed over the years, to comparing it to a rural location. Towards the end of the term, the children will be going on a fieldtrip around Bestwood conducting field work.

We are artists...

In Art, the children will be exploring sculpture, painting and printing. The two artists which will be key for their learning are Joan Miro and Peter Thorpe. During our sculpture topic, the children will be creating a bust of Medusa using only recycled items. Towards the end of term the children will be creating a combined piece of art incorporating printing and painting, using printing paint and watercolour.

We are philosophers...

In PSHE we will be learning about growing and changing during RSHE week and keeping safe.

Summer 1 - Groovy Greeks!

We are mathematicians...

In Maths, we will be continuing with our learning of fractions. We will develop our understanding of finding unit and non-unit fractions of a whole number. The children will also explore converting units. They will convert between units of measure, fractions and decimals, common conversions of 1 as well as conversions that correspond to 100 parts.

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book 'Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief'. We will use this as inspiration to write a diary entry. Following on from this, we be writing a non-chronological report about a Gorgon!

We are scientists...

Our focus last half term was materials. This half term, we will be using the knowledge we gained from this to practice working scientifically. Our big questions is 'What skills do scientists use when working scientifically?' Each week the children will work in specific skills that will lead them on to plan and conduct their very own investigation!

We are historians...

In History, we will be learning about the Ancient Greeks! Each week we will be exploring a different enquiry, such as who were the Greeks? What were their achievements?

We are artists...

In Art, we will be designing and creating our very own sculptures using natural resources.

We are designers...

In DT, we will be exploring monitoring devices.

PSHE...

In PSHE, we will be learning all about physical health and well-being.

Spring 2 - Whodunnit?!

We are mathematicians...

In maths, children will be introduced to the concept of volume. They will learn that volume is measure in cubic units and will develop the knowledge that volume of cuboids can be calculated by multiplying the length, width and height. This half term, children will also be able to explain what a factor is and explain how they can systematically find all the factors of a number. They will also explain how they can identify a prime number.

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘London Eye Mystery’. We will use this as inspiration to write a news report about the strange disappearance of one of the characters. Following on from this, we will use a video clip as a stimulus to write our own mystery story!

We are scientists...

Our focus for this half term is 'Materials'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knowledge and enquiry to be able to answer our big question: How can we change a material reversibly and irreversibly? Children will be learning all about dissolving materials and separating mixtures through filtering, sieving and evaporation.

We are historians...

In history, we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will explore why they invaded and settled in Britain, what life was really like for them and what they left behind.

We are designers...

In DT, we will be working towards making our very own stuffed toys.

PSHE...

In PSHE, we will be learning about Money and Work and take part in the fiver challenge.

Spring 1 - Lost in Space!

We are mathematicians...

In maths, we will be building on our Year 4 learning of calculating area. We will be able to explain what area is and use counting and multiplication as a strategies. To deepen our learning, we will explore calculating area of rectilinear shapes and use this knoweldge to solve problems. Using multiplication and divison, we will describe the changes in measurement and use this to solve comparison and change problems.

We are writers...

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘Orion Lost’. We will use this as inspiration to write our own narrative about a journey through space going wrong and landing at an unknown location. Following on from this, we will develop our writing techniques to write a biography about an important figure!

We are scientists

Our focus for this half term is 'Earth and Space'. Each week, we will be developing our scientific knoweldge and enquiry to be able to answer our big question: What moves and how do we know? We will explore the different planets in our solar sytem and how they rotate around the sun. We will develop our understanding of day and night as well as the movement of the moon around the Earth.

We are historians

In history, we will be learning about the Anglo-saxons and Vikings. We will explore why they invaded and settled in Britain, What life was really like for them and what they left behind.

We are designers

In DT, we will be working towards making our very own Automata design.

Autumn 2 - All Creatures Great and Small

Our new class novel is 'When the Mountains Roared' by Jess Butterworth.

We are mathematicians

In maths, we will be developing our knowledge of multiplication and division using short methods. Towards the end of the term, will be focusing on negative numbers, and be exploring how negative numbers can appear on both horizontal and vertical scales and develop an understanding of how to calculate intervals across zero.

We are writers

In English this half term, we will be studying the book ‘When the Mountains Roared’. We will use as inspiration to write our own persuasive magazine article about leopard conservation. As our class novel has links to Australia, we will also be writing a non-chronological report based on an Australian animal.

We are scientists

In science, we will be looking Forces. Throughout the half term, we will be working scientifically the gain an understanding of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling objects. We will explore the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction as well as recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have greater effect.

We are geographers

In geography, we will develop an understanding of the geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom

We are artists

In art, we have a textile focus this half term. We will be learning about the craft maker Mabel Mckay and develop weaving techniques to create our very own woven baskets.
